Learning patternmaking is far more than knowing how to make a pattern. It means understanding how a garment is constructed, how it takes shape on the body and how a base can become the starting point of a personal creation.

At dp studio, we have designed our resources to support this learning in a progressive, precise and concrete way, whether you are discovering patternmaking or wish to perfect your practice.

Our approach lets you progress step by step: understanding the principles of patternmaking, constructing the bases, learning to transform them, then gradually developing your ability to create your own models.

(01) — The books

The dp studio reference method

The three volumes of Le vêtement féminin — Modélisme, coupe à plat present the fundamentals needed to construct the womenswear wardrobe.

They are a reference for understanding the basics of patternmaking, the principles of garment construction and the various possibilities for transformation.

Starting well with the method

For the best possible understanding of the method, we recommend that you begin by carefully reading the fundamental information presented at the start of the books.

Do not skip any steps, particularly if you are new to patternmaking. Each notion covered contributes to understanding those that follow and lets you gradually acquire the basics needed to construct and transform models.

Start by mastering the method

Many users want to start straight away by making a model to their own measurements. We do not recommend it.

To discover the method in the best conditions, we advise starting with the size closest to your own body shape. This first experience lets you understand the principles of construction, get a feel for volumes and master the different stages of the method.

Once these basics are acquired, it becomes easier to transform the base and adapt it to your own measurements, with a better understanding of the garment and greater mastery of the modifications made.

Understanding the method before transforming it means giving yourself the means to create better.

(02) — The technical files

Learn a technique, step by step

Technical files let you approach one precise point of patternmaking in a clear, detailed and progressive way.

Taken from the dp studio method, they are designed to be consulted, practised and used directly in your projects.

They let you go deeper into a particular construction or technique without having to go through the whole method.

Technical files are also particularly useful when you are using a dp studio base pattern that you wish to transform. Understanding how a base is constructed lets you master its transformations better and make full use of its creative possibilities.

(03) — Where to start?

Which path for you?

Whether you are a beginner, an amateur dressmaker, a fashion student or a professional wishing to perfect your practice, learning patternmaking can begin at different levels.

Our aim is to support you progressively in your learning, giving you the knowledge, methods and tools you need to develop your autonomy and your own creative ability.

Because learning patternmaking is not only about reproducing a shape. It is about understanding the garment well enough to one day create your own.
