Review of the film "My Bloody Valentine";
10 years ago, just on Valentine's Day, a tragedy occurred in a small town. A terrible explosion occurred at one of the mines, as a result of which all the miners died, except for one – Harry Worden. While Warden was in a coma, the police determined that the explosion was not accidental: Harry destroyed his comrades, and intentionally. Warden, who had regained consciousness, then managed to escape, and he caused several more brutal murders. Young Tom Hanniger could have died, but the intervention of the police officers who fatally wounded Warden saved his life. After all this story, Tom left town and returned only now – having learned that his ex-lover Sarah had married their old friend, policeman Alex. But while Sarah begins to realize that she still loves her ex-boyfriend, Alex suspects Tom of murder: after his return, a maniac with a pickaxe and a miner's mask began to rage in the city again.
Although Patrick Lussier's film is only a remake of the 1981 Canadian slasher directed by George Mikhalka, very little remains of the original. And thank God! Mikhalka's film, may his devoted fans forgive me, could hardly have been considered a masterpiece then, and even more so now it is impossible to watch without boredom. Most of the original "Valentine" was occupied by conversations and showdowns of teenagers who, contrary to the warning, decided to celebrate Valentine's Day, and the plot, on the one hand, was excessively edifying, on the other, incredibly stupid. The remake's scriptwriters dealt with the basics cruelly, but fairly, retaining only the main plot (by the way, Valentine's Day has practically nothing to do with everything that is happening). In addition, the film casually changed the genre: the new "Valentine" is not based on the stereotypical scheme of youth slasher films "don't go, kids, to Africa for a walk" (a group of teenagers were going to have fun away from adults, and the maniac was right there), but on a much more interesting and twisted intrigue involving three-four main characters, one of whom is definitely a murderer. In fact, this is more of a bloody thriller detective with a serious admixture of the gore genre. Yes, there is enough meat, blood and other entertainment in the film - and this, of course, is no longer the funny special effects of the early 80s, with ketchup–colored blood. No, here we finally see the "tin" as it is: over the past thirty years, the scope of what is allowed has greatly expanded, and now with the help of computer technology, you can show, for example, how a maniac literally cuts off half a person's head – and show it in such a way that even seasoned horror fans will feel uncomfortable. Add to this the 3D effects that are finally working properly, and you get one of the best "bloody" films made in recent times.
